1434 फ्रांस के विश्वविख्यात सेंट पीटर कैथेड्रल की आधारशिला रखी गई।

1471 एडवर्ड चतुर्थ के नेतृत्व में रोजेस-द यॉर्किस्ट के युद्ध में बार्नेट शहर के पास लैंकास्ट्रीयन की हार हुई और रिचर्ड नेविल अर्ल ऑफ वारविक की हत्या की गई।

1659 मुगल शासक औरंगजेब ने दिल्ली पर हुकूमत की लड़ाई में अपने ही भाई दारा शिकोह को हराया।

1736 तस्कर एंड्रयू विल्सन की हत्या के बाद एडिनबर्ग में दंगे हुए। शहर के गार्ड कप्तान जॉन पोर्टियस ने अपने लोगों को भीड़ को आग लगाने का आदेश दिया। पोर्टियस को बाद में गिरफ्तार किया गया।

1809 फ्रांसीसी योद्धा और शासक नेपोलियन बोनापार्ट ने बावेरिया की लड़ाई में आस्ट्रिया को शिकस्त दी।

1814 नेपोलियन बोनापार्ट को पदच्युत किया गया।

1828 लेक्सियोग्राफर नूह वेबस्टर ने अमेरिकी अंग्रेजी के अपने शब्दकोश के पहले संस्करण का कॉपीराइट करवाया।

1849 यूरोपीय देश हंगरी ने आस्ट्रिया से स्वतंत्र होने की घोषणा की और लुईस कोसुथ को अपना नेता चुना।

1859 भारत के एक धनी व्यापारी और दानवीर जमशेद जी जीजाभाई का निधन हुआ।

1862 गुजरात के प्रमुख सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता प्रभाशंकर पाटनी का जन्म हुआ।

1865 अमेरिका के 16वें राष्ट्रपति, लोकतंत्र के प्रणेता अब्राहम लिंकन की वाशिंगटन के फोर्ड थियटर में गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी गई। इसी दिन भारतीय खड़ी बोली के प्रथम महाकाव्यकार अयोध्यासिंह उपाध्याय का जन्म हुआ।

1872 अमेरिका में वकीलों ने सैन फ्रांसिस्को बार एसोसिएशन का गठन किया। इसी दिन अब्दुल्ला यूसुफ अली नामक विख्यात ब्रिटिश-भारतीय बैरिस्टर और विद्वान जन्म बंबई में हुआ। ने इस्लाम के बारे में कई महत्वपूर्ण किताबें लिखीं और उनके द्वारा किया गया अंग्रेजी में कुरान का अनुवाद सबसे व्यापक रूप से जाना जाता है और अंग्रेजी भाषी दुनिया में उपयोग किया जाता है।

1891 भारत के संविधान के निर्माता बाबासाहेब भीमराव अंबेडकर का जन्म हुआ। आज हम भारतीयों को और खासतौर पर बहुजनों को जो भी अधिकार प्राप्त हैं वे बाबा साहेब के संविधान के कारण ही हैं। संविधान 26 जनवरी 1950 से लागू किया गया। डाॅ. अंबेडकर का कहना था, मुझे वह धर्म पसंद है जो स्वतंत्रता, समानता और बंधुत्व सिखाता है। मैं एक समुदाय की प्रगति को उस डिग्री से मापता हूं जो महिलाओं ने हासिल की है। वे इतिहास नहीं बना सकते जो इतिहास को भूल जाते हैं।

1909 संवैधानिक सरकार के खिलाफ एक सैन्य विद्रोह के बाद एक भीड़ ने अडानी विलायत, ओटिकन साम्राज्य में आर्मेनियाई लोगों का नरसंहार शुरू किया।

1912 ब्रिटेन के साउथैंपटन से अमेरिका के न्यूयॉर्क के लिए अपनी पहली यात्रा पर निकला यात्री समुद्री जहाज टाइटैनिक हिमखंड से टकराकर डूब गया।

1920 राजस्थान की प्रसिद्ध मांड लोक गायिका गवरी देवी का जन्म हुआ।

1922 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय संगीतकार, शास्त्रीय गायक और सरोद वादक अली अकबर खाँ का जन्म हुआ।

1934 जाने माने सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और महात्मा गांधी के पौत्र अरुण मणिलाल गांधी का जन्म डर्बन, दक्षिण अफ्रीका में हुआ।

1940 प्रसिद्ध कवि एवं साहित्यकार अवतार एनगिल का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन भारत के प्रसिद्ध सारंगी वादक और शास्त्रीय गायक सुल्तान खान का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन असम के डिब्रूगढ़ जिले के चबुआ में विश्व विख्यात ब्रिटिश फिल्म अभिनेत्री जूली क्रिस्टी का जन्म हुआ।

1944 मुंबई के बंदरगाह में हथियारों से भरे जहाज में विस्फोट हुआ इसमें 1200 से अधिक लोग मरे।

1950 बीसवीं सदी के महान संत और समाज सेवक रमण महर्षि का निधन हुआ।

1957 जाने माने भारतीय वैज्ञानिक कैलासवटिवु शिवन का जन्म कन्याकुमारी में हुआ। शिवन भारत के प्रमुख अंतरिक्ष वैज्ञानिक हैं, वर्तमान में भारतीय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन के अध्यक्ष हैं और विक्रम साराभाई अंतरिक्ष केंद्र तथा द्रव प्रणोदन केंद्र के निदेशक रहे हैं।

1962 भारत के महान अभियंता एवं राजनयिक, भारत रत्न से सम्मानित मोक्षगुंडम विश्वेश्वरैया का निधन हुआ।

1963 जानी मानी तमिल, तेलुगू, मलयालम, हिंदी, कन्नड़ आदि भाषाओं की फिल्मों, टेलीविजन की बोल्ड अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल साधना यानी शारी का जन्म हुआ। इसी दिन हिंदी के एक प्रमुख साहित्यकार, खोजी, अनुवादक और समाजवादी विचारक राहुल सांकृत्यायन जिनका वास्तविक नाम केदारनाथ पांडेय था, का निधन हुआ। राहुल को महापंडित कहा गया। वे प्रतिष्ठित बहुभाषाविद थे और बीसवीं सदी के पूर्वार्ध में उन्होंने यात्रा वृतांत यात्रा साहित्य तथा विश्व-दर्शन के क्षेत्र में साहित्यिक योगदान किए। तिब्बती बौद्ध साहित्य को भारत लाने, उसका अनुवाद करने में उन्होंने बहुत परिश्रम किया। जीवन के अंतिम वर्षों में वे माक्र्सवाद, समाजवाद से प्रभावित हुए और इस दर्शन को आगे बढ़ाया।

1972 जाने माने गायक कुणाल गांजावाला का जन्म हुआ।

1975 जानी मानी, खूबसूरत, बोल्ड बाॅलीवुड फिल्म तथा टेलीविजन अभिनेत्री तथा माॅडल राजेश्वरी सचदेव का जन्म बंबई में हुआ।

1981 पहला अंतरिक्ष यान कोलंबिया-1 वापस धरती पर लौटा। इसी दिन भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के राजनेता तथा स्वतंत्रता सेनानी हुए दरोगा प्रसाद राय का निधन हुआ। इसी दिन जानी मानी फिल्म अभिनेत्री और माॅडल अनीता हंसानंदानी का जन्म हुआ।

1985 हैजा के जीवाणु पर शोध कार्य करने वाले प्रसिद्ध भारतीय वैज्ञानिक शंभुनाथ डे का निधन हुआ।

1986 प्रसिद्ध भारतीय फिल्म निर्देशक, छायाकार और लेखक नितिन बोस का निधन हुआ।

1988 सोवियत संघ ने अमेरिका, पाकिस्तान और अफगानिस्तान के साथ जिनेवा में एक समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर कर अफगानिस्तान से अपनी सेना की वापसी पर सहमति जताई।

1994 भारत सहित 109 देशों ने गैट समझौते को स्वीकृत किया। यह विश्व व्यापार संगठन का पूर्ववर्ती समझौता हुआ।

1995 भारत चौथी बार एशिया कप क्रिकेट चैंपियन बना।

1999 मलेशिया के अपदस्थ उपप्रधानमंत्री अनवर इब्राहिम को भ्रष्टाचार के मामले में छह वर्ष कैद की सजा सुनाई गई।। इसी दिन पाकिस्तान की पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री बेनजीर भुट्टो तथा उनके पति आसिफ अली जरदारी को सरकारी ठेकों में दलाली खाने के आरोप में पांच वर्ष की कैद की सजा सुनाई गई। पाकिस्तान ने परमाणु क्षमता वाले अपने दूसरे प्रक्षेपास्त्र शाहीन-1 का परीक्षण किया।

2000 रूस की संसद ड्यूमा ने संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका और रूस के बीच स्टार्ट-2 परमाणु शस्त्र कटौती संधि का अनुमोदन किया। इसी दिन आतंकवाद से निपटने के लिए सहयोग के आहवान के साथ जी -77 शिखर सम्मेलन हवाना में सम्पन्न।

2002 अंतर्राष्ट्रीय न्यायालय में मुकदमें का सामना कर रहे सर्बियाई नेता स्लोबोदान मिलोसेविच का जेल में निधन हुआ। शक है कि उनके विरोधियों ने साजिशन उनकी हत्या करवा दी।

2003 इस्रायल के प्रधानमंत्री एरियल शैरोन अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर आलोचनाओं के बाद पश्चिमी तट से कुछ यहूदी बस्तियाँ हटाने पर मजबूरन सहमत हुए। इसी दिन मानव जीनोम परियोजना के पूरा होने की घोषणा की गई। इसी दिन ब्रिटेन में आयरलैंड की आजादी के लिए दशकों से हथियारबंद संघर्ष चला रही आयरिश रिपब्लिकन आर्मी ने हथियार डाल देने का निर्णय लिया।

2004 अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति जार्ज बुश ने इराक को दूसरा वियतनाम न बनने देने की घोषणा की। इसी दिन भारत के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गांधी हत्याकांड से जुड़े लिट्टे उग्रवादी वी. मुरलीधरन की कोलंबो में हत्या हो गई। 

2005 भारत और अमेरिका ने अपने-अपने उड़ान क्षेत्र एक-दूसरे की एयरलाइनों के लिए खोलने का समझौता किया।

2006 चीन में प्रथम बौद्ध विश्व सम्मेलन शुरू हुआ। इसी दिन इंटरपोल ने इंडोनेशिया की राजधानी जकार्ता सम्मेलन में एंटी करप्शन एकेडमी के गठन का प्रस्ताव सुझाया।

2008 राज्यसभा के सभापति मोहम्मद हामिद अंसारी ने बजट सत्र के दूसरे चरण के पहले दिन नव निर्वाचित 55 सदस्यों में से 50 को शपथ दिलायी। इसी दिन भारतीय मूल के कनाडाई मंत्री दीपक ओबेरॉय को अफगानिस्तान पर गठित कनाडाई संसद की विशेष समिति का सदस्य चुना गया।

2008 भारत और बांग्लादेश के बीच रेल सेवा शुरू हुई। 1965 तक ढाका और कोलकाता के बीच रेल संपर्क था, लेकिन 1965 के भारत-पाकिस्तान युद्ध के समय ट्रेन का संचालन रोक दिया गया था। भारत-बांग्लादेश के बीच बंधन एक्सप्रेस ट्रेन का संचालन भी किया जाता है।

2010 भारत में निर्मित पहले क्रायोजेनिक रॉकेट जीएसएलवी-डी3 का प्रक्षेपण नाकाम हो गया। पश्चिम बंगाल, उड़ीसा, झारखंड और बिहार में 2010 को आये चक्रवाती तूफान में लगभग 123 लोगों की मौत हो गयी।

2013 कनाडा की लिबरल पॉलिटिकल पार्टी ने पियरे ट्रूडो के बेटे जस्टिन ट्रूडो को अपना नया नेता चुना। वे अब भी प्रधानमंत्री हैं।

2014 इस्लामी संगठन बोको हरम ने नाइजीरिया में चिबोक स्थित एक बोर्डिंग स्कूल से 275 लड़कियों का अपहरण कर लिया।

1659 Mughal ruler Aurangzeb defeated his own brother Dara Shikoh in the battle for the control of Delhi.

1736 Riots in Edinburgh following the murder of smuggler Andrew Wilson. The city's guard captain, John Porteus, ordered his men to set the crowd on fire. Porteus is subsequently arrested.

1809 French warrior and ruler Napoleon Bonaparte defeats Austria in the Battle of Bavaria.

1814 Napoleon Bonaparte was deposed.

1909 A mob begins a massacre of Armenians in Adani Vilayet, Ottoman Empire after a military uprising against the constitutional government.

1912 The passenger ship Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York, USA.

1919 Shamshad Begum, famous playback singer of very famous Hindi films because of her melodious voice, was born.

1920 Rajasthan's famous Mand folk singer Gawri Devi was born.

1944 An arms-laden ship explodes in the port of Mumbai, killing more than 1200 people.

1950 Raman Maharshi, a great saint and social worker of the 20th century, passed away.

1957 Kailasavativu Sivan, noted Indian scientist, was born in Kanyakumari. Sivan is India's leading space scientist, currently the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, and has been the director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center and the Liquid Propulsion Centre.

1962 Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, India's greatest engineer and diplomat, Bharat Ratna awardee, passed away.

1963 Well-known Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada films, bold television actress and model Sadhana i.e. Shaari was born. On this day, Rahul Sankrityayan, a prominent Hindi litterateur, researcher, translator and socialist thinker, whose real name was Kedarnath Pandey, passed away. Rahul was called Mahapandit. He was a distinguished polyglot and made literary contributions in the field of travelogue, travel literature and world philosophy in the first half of the twentieth century. He worked hard to translate and bring Tibetan Buddhist literature to India. In the last years of his life, he was influenced by Marxism, Socialism and took this philosophy forward.

1972: Kunal Ganjawala, noted singer, was born.

1975 Rajeshwari Sachdev, well-known, beautiful, bold Bollywood film and television actress and model, was born in Bombay.

1981 The first space shuttle Columbia-1 returned back to Earth. On this day, Indian National Congress politician and freedom fighter Daroga Prasad Rai passed away. Famous film actress and model Anita Hansanandani was born on this day.

1985 Famous Indian scientist Shambhunath Dey, who did research on cholera bacteria, passed away.

1986 Nitin Bose, noted Indian film director, cinematographer and writer, passed away.

1988 The Soviet Union agreed to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan by signing an agreement in Geneva with the US, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In 1994, 109 countries including India ratified the GATT agreement. It was the precursor agreement of the World Trade Organisation.

1995 India became the Asia Cup cricket champion for the fourth time.

1999 Malaysia's ousted Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is sentenced to six years in prison for corruption. On the same day, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto and her husband Asif Ali Zardari were sentenced to five years in prison for kickbacks in government contracts. Pakistan test-fired its second nuclear-capable missile Shaheen-1.

2000 The Duma, Russia's parliament, ratifies the START-2 nuclear arms reduction treaty between the United States and Russia. On the same day the G-77 summit concluded in Havana with a call for cooperation to deal with terrorism.

2002 Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, facing trial at the International Court of Justice, dies in prison. It is suspected that his opponents conspired to get him murdered.

2003 Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is forced to agree to the removal of some Jewish settlements in the West Bank following international criticism. On this day the completion of the Human Genome Project was announced. On the same day, the Irish Republican Army, which had been waging an armed struggle for the independence of Ireland in Britain for decades, decided to lay down its arms.

2004 US President George Bush declares not to allow Iraq to become another Vietnam. On the same day V. Muraleedharan, an LTTE militant linked to the assassination of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, was killed in Colombo.

2005 India and the US signed an agreement to open their airspace to each other's airlines.

2006 The first Buddhist World Conference began in China. On the same day, Interpol suggested the proposal to set up an Anti-Corruption Academy in the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta Conference.

2008 Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari administered the oath to 50 of the newly elected 55 members on the first day of the second phase of the budget session.
